The app Weekly does exactly what you describe including the Safe-to-Spend fund. I have finally found success with a budgeting app using it the last few years.

Does anyone have a good visual dashboard or system for their finances? I feel like I am driving in the dark half the time

I made a money map template you can use to see your resources, commitments, goals and yes fund in one place. You can get a PDF worksheet or spreadsheet template here under "Your Money Map": https://www.youdontneedabudget.com/resources

I don’t think ‘yes’ fund is a silly name at all! I’m a baby Xer and we told ourselves ‘no’ as girls and women constantly. Saying YES to just ME without shame or having to justify it is a revolutionary way to look at my spending. I felt an enormous sense of relief when I read that chapter in YDNAB and I will admit- I spent way too much money taking that restrictive thinking off! But I have regained equilibrium and we are on a really good money journey now.

A very encouraging read and I am determined to try this without being too disappointed about what I have left over for Yes-es. Anyone else have that feeling? It’s the sinking reality of needing to increase my income. One thing at a time. And hooray to the Weekly app rec too from the fellow reader - thank you! 💸

This is how I have always managed my money - so I am so happy to see others writing about it. When I first started earning my own I would pay as many bills as possible at the beginning of the month (including sending money to savings) so I would know what was left was pretty much all mine to do with as I pleased.

Now that my baking app makes it so much easier to open different accounts, I have a few more buckets (travel, kids sports fees)- but the overall premise hasn't changed.

I have always found it very freeing

It’s so interesting to see how definitions of a budget are so different. I have always moved money to where it needs to go then spent the rest. That’s what I’ve always considered a budget to be 😂

It’s worked, though sometimes I fail to take account of planned spending such as events coming up in the month, but generally it’s served me well.

This might also explain why I’m baffled by all the budgeting advice about having 74 sinking funds and 42 line items on spreadsheets etc. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I definitely prefer something simple.

My OH does the same but goes a step further by divvying up what’s left by the number of weeks in the month which I’m far too lazy to do!

I hope people give it a go 🙂

Fellow “Simple” bank account alum. I, too, was devastated by their acquisition. I raved about that app and really loved the digital envelope/buckets that you could create in your account. I’m more of a zero-based budget kind of person, so I didn’t have experience with the safe-to-spend aspect but can see the value. I personally transitioned to YNAB when the announcement from Simple came and haven’t looked back. However, I’m all for petitioning the return of Simple one day. That bank was ahead of its time.
