Love the advice to delete the app + remove auto payment info (a bit hard with Apple Pay, but still). Companies do everything to make checkout as seamless as possible (subscriptions, autopay, saving our card info), and they don’t do this to be nice, they do this because we’re more likely to complete the transaction if it’s easier (on autopilot!)
Oof. This is so hard. I remember in circa 2017, my money was completely out of whack because of take out. Meaning, restaurant food I was *calling* in an order for and driving to pick up and bring home myself. The last couple of years, with DoorDash and UberEats, it was that on steroids because it was that same cost PLUS fees and tips and more fees. I truly think it's an impossibility to feed ourselves this way AND still maintain other commitments (including pleasure, enjoyment, hobbies, etc).
To break the cycle most recently, I needed two things: 1) an improvement in my energy that I couldn't force despite trying, AND 2) entirely overhauling our go-to recipes into something that fits our taste buds, preferences, and needs in the here and now. In other words, breaking the cycle took SO MUCH.
That said, learning that door dash will soon be delivering here via drone honestly is alone enough for me to be OUT.
It is worthwhile to do an experiment on how much time and effort the unpleasant/inconvenient thing you're putting off actually takes and how you feel afterward. Sometimes the inconvenient thing looms much larger in our minds than the reality. It's like looking at your money step, but for time. DoorDash is incredibly slow where we live compared to doing our own pickup or making a basic pantry meal. Convenience is their argument/marketing, is it true for you?
Great post!! When I did a massive review of our finances last fall, I was SHOCKED at how much we were spending in delivery. And we cook most meals, but when we didn’t get to the store or the meal we had planned was too complicated and we were tired…DoorDash. It was always when we had planned poorly or past us hadn’t thought “I’ll need options.” We are doing better but, still blowing past our set budget for delivery and eating out most months. It’s crazy how expensive delivery is. I order Indian food for two and it’s $80 for two entrees and some naan. That’s insane!!!
DoorDash as a company is also actively pushing against DC’s right to self-governance and urging Congress to meddle in local government simply to avoid paying a 20 cent fee to the city.
This is a not an “anti-delivery” comment - it is simply anti-Doordash as a company!

Yes, agreed! I find DoorDash delivery generally lackluster or disappointing, which makes it not worth the cost and wait for me.
