Building your own thing while freelancing
A quick peek behind the scenes of Healthy Rich
Here’s some fun news I think you’ll enjoy: Muck Rack recently featured Healthy Rich in its series on journalists launching independent side projects.
In this Q&A with Muck Rack’s features editor, Jessica Lawlor, I got to talk about how I formed Healthy Rich out of the ashes of two projects I’d tinkered with in 2020, and how I came up with the brand’s name and tagline. I also got to geek out about my favorite BTS subject: how I simplified our editorial process by starting a podcast :)
If you’re a journalist or writer interested in building something of your own, check out my Q&A to learn more about my experience and get my best advice for other freelancers building their own thing.

P.S. Muck Rack has done a ton of these Q&As, and all of these people are so inspiring! While you’re there, give these a read, too:
Rachel Leingang spun her experience as a government journalist in Arizona to create a newsletter that keeps non-politicos in the know about what’s happening at the state’s Capitol.
Tom Ley is the editor-in-chief of Defector, which he co-founded with fellow ex-staffers from Deadspin who quit en masse after a colleague was unjustly fired.
Britany Robinson writes One More Question, a newsletter with resources and stories for freelance writers, on the side of her career as a freelance environmental journalist.
Hunter Harris was recruited by Substack to leave her job at Vulture and start her own pop culture and movies newsletter.
🥑 Healthy Rich is a platform for conversations that illuminate the diversity of our relationships with work and money. We publish, produce and host projects from budding creators whose voices we don’t hear enough in personal finance media, like BIPOC, women, LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities.
