Grow your freelance business with better clients (a free workshop!)
I’m partnering with freelancer platform Hectic for this workshop on how to manage your time, choose better clients and grow your freelance business.
I returned to full-time freelancing a couple of years ago after being laid-off from a short-lived full-time editing job. I scrambled to fill my roster with work and was quickly able to make enough to get by — but at a much lower income than I’d made in full-time work.
Within three months, I’d gotten my bearings and doubled my monthly freelancing income, so that in 2020 I earned $6,000 more in freelance revenue than the highest salary I’d ever received as a full-timer. Another year later, I’d doubled that monthly income again and went on to earn $163,000 in revenue in 2021 (while working about three days per week).
Some of this quick growth has to do with tactics I’ve talked about here before: choosing a niche, reducing pitching and leaning on my network.
But it started with a simple time-management tactic that revealed a ton about my work in those early days. This tactic helped me choose better clients and assignments that played to my strengths and boosted my effective hourly rate by 4x in my first year back to freelancing.
When my friends at the freelancer platform Hectic invited me to contribute to their workshop series on growing a freelance business, I knew right away this is what I’d talk about.
Other educators in the series are talking about ways to find more clients as a freelancer. And that’s important, too. But I’m a minimalist, and I’m all about ease — how can you increase your income without increasing your workload? That’s what I’ll share in my workshop.
Through this free workshop, Growing your freelance business with better clients: A simple strategy that doubled my income, I’ll share:
The simple calendar strategy I used to get better clients and double my earnings in four months as a full-time freelancer.
How to work based on earnings, not hours, so you can increase your income while reducing your hours (or days!) worked.
How to identify and drop time-sucking clients to make room for more of the work you love.
This workshop combines a lot of things I’m very nerdy about: finance, freelancing, time management and organization 🥳 I’m excited to share it and grateful to Hectic for offering it to participants for free!
Register here if you want to attend or get a recording of the workshop.
Hope to see you there!
Cheers,
Dana
P.S. You’ll give Hectic your email address when you register for the workshop, so let me quickly vouch for them:

I’m obsessed with the Hectic platform, and I use it to manage my client pipeline, projects and invoices for Healthy Rich.
