The myth of meritocracy and the illusion of exceptionalism is killing oppressed and marginalized people. We are trying to outwork poverty in a rigged flawed corrupt capitalist society. It’s so infuriating and I’m sick of us excusing the people who uphold classism and late stage capitalism.

¨in the form of privilege based on your race, gender, age, sexuality or ability; a family capable of caring for you; a hospital, a grocery store and a school within accessible distance;¨ ...

Thank you! People not familiar with underserved areas miss the fact the bare society logistical basics don´t exist for people to work with to build a life, which most suburbs and towns have by default. I´d add reliable transportation and utilities to that list, but noting ¨grocery stores¨ really drives the point home. I used to see beat up bodegas selling bad quality groceries for higher prices in a "bad neighborhood¨, than a fancy delicatessen organic farm fresh store in manhattan where it would be half the price for a better quality alternative. It's insane and predatory.

IMO, the ¨anti-safety net¨ crowd are ultimately the mark, bcs their tax dollars are going towards spending that´s not in anyone´s well being interests, including their own, with the blame being shifted to unlucky folks in underserved areas. totally diabolical

I grew up hearing the bootstrap BS and watched my mom go from a Black activist type to wanting to be a middle aged white man in a Black woman’s body. Honestly it was effing confusing. But that’s what this country does to folks if you take it seriously. This is an insane asylum and the patients have the keys.
