EoR No. 22: Where will you find joy this summer?
Plus an argument for not giving financial advice, the right response to transphobia, the fiction I’m into right now and more
Top of mind
I’ve been retreating a little these past few weeks. Spring and summer always put my head in the clouds, and this year I’ve needed the retreat more than ever. I’ve been reading more fiction and less hot takes, getting my hands in the dirt (I know that’s the opposite of the clouds, but it still feels dreamy!), soaking up sun on my balcony, taking evening walks and enjoying so much daylight ☀️
With so much in the world trying to drag us down, we have to remember that protecting our joy (and others’) is the whole point here. Where will you find joy among the chaos this summer?

💬 Let’s discuss
Where will you find joy this summer?
Whether you’ll joyfully spend money without guilt or keep it simple and enjoy life on the cheap, how will you enjoy yourself in the coming months? How do you unwind, retreat, detach, decompress? Where do you find money stress getting in the way of unwinding — and how can you alleviate it to enjoy life more?

Fun fact: I was in a bookstore years ago browsing the section of books about writing and checked the spine of all of RPC’s books to learn that his publisher was Little, Brown Spark — the first time I heard of that imprint. I wanted to write books about writing at the time, so I filed the name in my mind and thought Some day I’ll send them a book proposal. Fast forward to 2022, when a Spark editor reached out to me to request a proposal on budget culture, and my first book was born!
This summer we are planning a trip to a cabin owned by close family in north central Minnesota. Time off the grid and not an expensive trip to stay with family has been really good when we can do it. Last year we had a case of COVID-19 in the family and couldn't go. Very disappointing.
I'm 1.5 months into my new job working for a City. Less salary than my last job with a private consultant, but lower stress, consistent hours, and better benefits. I'm going to say those are more important as I get older and continue to live with a chronic health condition. I'm also taking baby steps to reduce the amount of time I spend tracking our finances. Letting go a little more is kind of scary, but also freeing.
Love the story about the bookstore and Little Brown Spark!
