I hate to think people are being shamed when they ask for help, but I have seen it happen. People often think their inability to save is a personal failing rather than the system failing them.
I saw this as a social worker a lot. It’s very easy to blame the client while never acknowledging that this patchwork of systems is not designed to help them even remotely be safe or supported. The double kick in the pants is that they can’t earn a dollar more as then they’re punished for it by removing assistance. I taught a lot of clients how to find small part time work under the table just so they could afford a little bit more then absolutely almost nothing.
Thank you for doing that work! That’s such a terrible position to be put in. I’d love to see our social services designed to truly meet people’s needs.
