This was fascinating! As someone with little to no knowledge about the book publishing process, I feel like I got a glimpse of the costs and benefits of publishing a book. A lot goes into it. Still, it makes me want to write one, one day.
Thank you for this little peak inside the publishing world. I had no idea publishers don’t pay for sensitivity readings. Seems like a no brainer for them to pick up that cost.
I’d love to see them picking up more of those editorial costs, especially for writers with smaller advances who can’t dip into those payments to cover it.
We are in different universes! I do almost all publishing work myself. I did hire a professional editor for The Trailer Park Rules, using my pandemic check. I’ll probably never be able to do that again, though. I use Fiverr for my covers. I know what I want my covers to look like but need someone to make them look that way.
I've done self-publishing, as well, and I was an evangelist for it in my early years as a writer. I love the creativity of the process! I love that there are so many options to find the set up that works for you — I haven't worked with an indie publisher or a hybrid publisher yet, but both of those are interesting options, too.
Oh, well, honestly I’d rather be traditionally published if I could have done that. Independent publishing is my only option so far but perhaps eventually I’ll be discovered. :)
Can appreciate publishing expense via book writing: Tried writing, editing & publishing, circa 1980’s, to no avail.
However, know first hand where a writer will rely/depend on their spouse to publish……on top of asking potential readers to contribute. Seems rather hubris, seriously prejudice, especially when those who truly experience financial difficulties in publishing world? Single folks like myself.
No blaming here, because being single does provide advantages, many sweet spot moments as well. Just asking for less discrimination & more understanding: Publishing on one’s own, whether male or female, is more of a Mt. Everest-style attempt than as a twosome.
It absolutely makes a difference to have a partner who is able and willing to carry the household to free up brain space for writing! That reality goes way beyond publishing; splitting the financial burden of a household comes with advantages across the board. I'd love to see better social services to create that ease and space for everyone equally.

Thank you for the refreshing honesty Dana
